BIM 50 YEARS

Five new compositions for five new quintets, at the (private) anniversary concert of the BIM association for improvising musicians

This private concert has been moved from November 21, 2021.

The BIMHUIS celebrates its forty-seventh year while the BIM is 50 years old! The BIM, the Dutch professional association for improvising musicians, was founded in 1971 to represent the interests of jazz and improvised music in The Netherlands. This year singer Fleurine became the first female president in the history of the BIM.

This private anniversary concert features five intergenerational quintets. who never played with each other before. Each will perform a new composition commissioned by the BIM.

I. Band leader, composer and bassist Joris Teepe mixes five styles, one per band member. From swing to tango, from improv to Balkan, and from avant-jazz to gypsy. Now you can listen to fifty years of BIM rolled up into one composition. Featuring: Michael Moore alto sax/clarinet, Joris Teepe double bass, Natalio Sued sax, George Dumitriu violin/guitar, Jamie Peet percussion.

II. Band leader and composer Thomas Johannsen has brought together an unusual line-up of instruments, as well as five personalities, each with a unique signature developed through the use of poetry and the human voice. Featuring: Estrella Acosta voice, Thomas Johannsen voice, Çiğdem Okuyucu voice, Nora Mulder piano/cimbalom, Raoul van der Weide double bass/cello.

III. Iman Spaargaren composed a triptych representing the rise, growth and decay op Europe in the twenty-first century. Orchestral sections and classical themes are interchanged with compelling free funk, dreamy soundscapes and raw experiment. Featuring: Iman Spaargaren tenor sax/clarinet/electronics, Jasper le Clercq violin, Dodó Kis recorder/electronics, Paul Pallesen guitar, Yonga Sun drums.

IV. Composer Miguel Ángel Santaella formed a completely acoustic line-up that brings up a new challenge for him. The tension between the various timbres of the instruments causes atmospheric contrasts. A tangible groove emerges from the complex rhythms and harmonies. Featuring: Miguel Ángel Santaella bandleader/composer, Bob Roos drums, Arjen Gorter double bass, Riccardo Maronga bass clarinet, Kristina Fuchs voice, Giuseppe Doronzo baritone sax.

V. Ian Cleaver took inspiration from all the differents sounds, melodies and genres he experienced in the 25 years he spent in Amsterdam and New York City, where he currently lives and studies. Expect music inspired by the classic American jazz tradition (Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker a.o.), but also his newly formed interest in Brazilian music. Ian Cleaver trumpet, Ben van Gelder saxophone, Jesse van Ruller guitar, Jos Machtel double bass, Han Bennink drums.

This BIM Lustrum concert is only for members, promotors and press. Are you a musician, but not a member yet? Apply here!
