Iman Spaargaren Quintet

Five new bands celebrate the anniversary of BIM, the union for improvising musicians.

The BIM, the union for improvising musicians in The Netherlands, was founded fifty years ago. For this anniversary year, five band leaders were each commissioned to found a new intergenerational band to write new compositions for it. The bands have toured two by two through The Netherlands. Now they will perform in one concert: five bands, each with its own character, with brand new compositions in a variety of styles.

Check www.bimpro.nl for more information on the BIM anniversary. The concert program:

IAN CLEAVER’S MONEYTREE-UNTI-PUKI

Trumpeter Ian Cleaver (1996) lives and studies in Amsterdam and New York. For BIM50 he composed a mixture of sounds and melodies that have influenced him throughout this life. For example, he cherishes the American jazz tradition, but newer interests such as Brazilian music appear in his composition as well. Cleaver is the youngest BIM member.

Ian Cleaver trumpet, Ben van Gelder alto sax, Jesse van Ruller guitar, Jos Machtel double bass, Han Bennink drums

MIGUEL ÁNGEL SANTAELLA’S ACROSS

Composer and conductor Miguel Ángel Santaella chose an innovative line-up for BIM50. The tension between the sounds of the various instruments is essential here. Santaella conducts the quintet, that includes drums, double bass, baritone sax, bass clarinet and vocals. The instruments carry the melodic construction, and they also form the harmonic foundation of the musical structure.

Bob Roos drums, Arjen Gorter double bass, Riccardo Maronga bass clarinet, Kristina Fuchs vocals, Giuseppe Doronzo baritonsax

JORIS TEEPE’S TENSION & RELEASE

Double bassist Joris Teepe fuses countless styles with his band Tension & Release. From New York power jazz and American swing to avant-garde and classical. The band members add their own specialisms: free improv, Argentinean folk, and Romanian Balkan, for example. Teepe’s composed passages for strings touch on classical music.

Michael Moore sax/clarinet, Joris Teepe double bass, Natalio Sued sax, George Dumitriu violin/guitar, Jamie Peet percussion

THOMAS JOHANNSEN’S HIDDEN SONGS

Vocalist and instant composer Thomas Johannsen has developed an elementary approach to improvisation with the Genetic Choir Ensemble. Recently this earned him a grant from Fonds Podiumkunsten. For BIM50 he devised an unusual combination of musicians from both world music and free improvisation, from different generations, together in the same band. In the spirit of the BIM’s founders, and with three vocalists on stage, his quintet creates adventurous music out of seemingly incongruous styles.

Raoul van der Weide double bass/cello, Estrella Acosta vocals, Nora Mulder piano, Thomas Johannsen vocals, Çiğdem Okuyucu vocals

IMAN SPAARGAREN’S RISE AND FALL

Tenor saxophonist Iman Spaargaren’s BIM50 composition has a political dimension. It’s a triptych that represents the rise, fall and decay of Europe in the 21st century. With World War II as the catalyst of the European project, and Brexit and Orbán threatening the ivory tower of Brussels. In his music, Spaargaren aims to capture sociological themes, contemporary politics, and current social tensions.

Yonga Sun drums, Paul Pallesen guitar, Jasper le Clercq violin, Iman Spaargaren tenor sax/clarinet/electronica, Dodó Kis recorders
